Advent Reflections: Day Four

On this mountain the LORD of hosts
will provide for all peoples
A feast of rich food and choice wines,
juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines.
On this mountain he will destroy
the veil that veils all peoples,
The web that is woven over all nations;
he will destroy death forever.
The Lord GOD will wipe away
the tears from all faces;
The reproach of his people he will remove
from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken.

Is 21:6-10

The verse for today comes at just the right time. As the holiday season ramps up we often begin to think in terms of “getting through” the holidays. “Getting through” this season indicates that what we’re doing is something that is to be endured or tolerated but in the reality of this event as Believers, perhaps our aim ought to be less about endurance and more about an opening of ourselves. This is where we begin to experience the feeling of “hope” that Advent offers up. For as long as we’re closed off, hunched over, protecting ourselves from the onslaught of holiday sales and programming we are not open to hearing what God says to us, daily.

Think instead today of the great feast on that mountaintop. As you do the position for today focus, on a physical level, on opening up at the heart, stretching the muscles of the chest and shoulders and releasing tension that comes of that hunched, protected position. Imagine throwing off the “veil that veils all peoples,” imagine the “web that is woven” torn from you, allowing you to move freely.

Our position is called Alpha. From Wisdom begin by drawing hands back just behind your body, open at the heart first. This position begins and moves from the heart, remember this. Pull shoulder blades together in the back and bend at the elbows slightly. When you feel ready, begin to lift your body from the mat and straighten. Let your head drop back if you’d like but be mindful that you keep opening up at the heart and when you lower back to the mat, bring your head back to the neutral position carefully.

Move back into Wisdom from here, hinging forward slightly and reaching arms forward toward your toes. Wisdom and Alpha are complementary positions.
